Image, digital, color, young man in white cap and gown standing in front of white one level home, green bushes and grass. LeRoy "Lee" Lemke graduated from Elgin High School (EHS) in 1962. At that time his family, dad Roy, mom Anna, and sister Shirley were living at 200 N. Hickory Avenue (pictured here) in the home they built in 1956. It was during this construction that Lee shared with the museum, "This was the beginning of my interest in how things work and lead eventually to an Aeronautical Engineering degree and work on the Stealth Bomber." In fact, in the 1962 Maroon, (EHS yearbook), Lee listed his intended career as "Missile Engineer." Lee also shared, "I had a summer job at Flexonics one year and worked at Apple Orchard Country Club several summers in the dining room, where I waited on Werner Von Braun when he visited Flexonics in June 1961… Werner Von Braun was kind of a hero of mine because I was very interested in the space program. I had gone to the 1960 Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs…They showed a film there about his life. So when I waited on him in person a year later having lunch at Apple Orchard County Club, I was thrilled. It was pure chance and I think all I did was pour his water or give him a salad. After he left, I cleared the dishes and instead of throwing his name card away I kept it. I still have it… Years later, partially because of my job, I was able to meet 2 of the 12 men who have landed on the moon." |
