Card, greeting, 5" w x 6" l (folded), paper, Front- color illustration of man and woman outside in snow, building behind, man is ringing bell attached to candy cane, cutout- "The Schultzs", Inside- illustration of man and woman holding open card on which is printed- "With every good wish for Christmas and a New Year of Happy Days", gray "envelope" with stamp- in black- "The Schultzs, Ruby, Billie" , Back- brownish stain from card stored against it. William "Billie," "Bill", Schultz (1897-1993) was born on a farm in the Bartlett area. In 1907, his family moved into the village. Bill attended Bartlett School where he completed his 8th grade education. He went onto graduate from Elgin Business School becoming an electrician and master plumber. When he was 17, Bill began working for his father Herman H. Schultz at the family's business, H.H. Schultz Hardware once located on Bartlett Avenue. In July 1922, Bill married Ruby Lester Schultz (1901-1993) of Elgin. They built their first home on Oak Avenue, where they raised their three daughters: Annette, Naomi and Nancy. With the sudden passing of Herman in 1936, Bill took over the operations of the business later purchasing it from his mother in 1950. He and Ruby ran the business until his retirement in 1964. This charming undated Christmas card was mostly like sent to family and friends in the late 1950s/1960s after their daughters were married and moved out of the home. |
