Postcard, 5 1/4" w 3 1/4" l, cardstock, Front- real image of 13 ladies wearing long dresses/skirts, aprons, some holding brooms, in front of building, arrow pointing to woman at top right. Back- written in ink, "Ladies cleaning Immanuel Church Bartlett. Grace Johnson's mother (arrow) -Annie." With brooms and rags in hand and aprons on, the women of Immanuel United Church of Christ pose for this picture outside the church's entrance prior to tackling cleaning the interior. Annie Leiseberg (1880-1940) is in the upper right corner, marked with the arrow. She and her husband William C. and daughters, Lillie and Grace, were the 62nd family to join the congregation which was chartered in 1891. Annie was a charter member of the church's Sewing Circle which was established in 1919 and was its first treasurer. The members sewed and mended for the children at the Bensenville Orphanage, made quilts, aprons and fancy work for their bazaars, hosted suppers, ice cream socials and bake sales. Between 1919 and 1939 this group of women raised and donated $2,954.00 to the welfare of the congregation. |
