According to the September 30, 1910 Cook County Herald, "Bartlett Firemen held a meeting Monday night and decided to use money in the treasury to buy caps for the Fire Co." A few weeks later the newspaper noted, "Bartlett Firemen held their regular meeting Tuesday and gave a drill. They made a fine appearance in their new uniforms." This cap was manufactured by G. A. Goebel Company located in Chicago and consists of a navy wool crown with a leather brim and band. Note the buttons have the initials FD and the BFD, Bartlett Fire Department, on the laurel pin. . The Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department, today the Bartlett Fire Protection District, traces its long rich history back to 1897 when a group of Bartlett citizens gathered together for the purpose of forming a volunteer fire department. Twenty-six men, all over sixteen years of age, signed the by-laws and the constitution of the new fire department which was drawn up by George Struckman. The first piece of equipment was a Model #38 Howe Hand Pumper purchased by the Village for $720. This pumper is on display at the Station 1 Headquarters located at 234 N. Oak Avenue. |
