Ruler, caliper, 12" l x 1.", fully opened, 6 1/2" l x 1 1/2" folded in half, boxwood and brass, hinged, printed on wood- "Stanley No. 36-1/2 R Warranted Boxwood Made in U.S.A.", brass jaw extends for measuring, This Stanley No. 36-1/2 R caliper ruler was used to provide extremely accurate measurements when measuring smaller objects and was more precise than a standard ruler. It was one of the many tools used at the Bartlett Implement Co. which was once located at 120 W. Bartlett Avenue. The boxwood and brass ruler is hinged and can be folded in half or fully opened. The brass jaw head can be extended for measuring say a pipe or other object. The implement company traces its beginnings to 1941 when it opened selling new and refurbished John Deere products, offering repair services and more. The initial proprietors were Edmund G. Krumfuss and his brother Alvin Krumfuss (1890-1972). With the continual annexation of farmland, now subdivisions, a going out of business auction was held in November 1971. Everything was up for sale including shop and office equipment, farm machinery and more than $8,000 in John Deere parts. This closure signaled the end of Bartlett's rural heritage and the beginning of suburban. The donor was the company's bookkeeper and longtime employee. |
