Receipt, 8" w x 4" l, paper, dark beige, Front- form, printed in black ink, across top- "Receipt for Charges Collected From Consignee...", in pencil- form was filled in with information, Back- "Delivery in Good Condition is a feature of Railway Express Service" On April 11,1942, consignee "E Struckman,", sent a package from the Bartlett depot, via the Railway Express Agency (REA), for delivery. Weighing "2" lbs., he was charge 50 cents in total for its delivery by the railroad, in this case the Milwaukee Road. The person who handled the transaction was Joseph Charneskey, Bartlett's depot agent at the time. His signature is at the bottom. Like UPS and Fed Ex today, the Railway Express Agency, in operation from 1918 to 1975, was once the nation's package delivery service. E. Struckman was the son of George Struckman, Bartlett's first and third village president. Emil, a school teacher, returned to Bartlett in the 1940s where he was principal and teacher at Bartlett School. He also was appointed village clerk in the early 1940s, serving a couple of years. |
