Postcard, 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", paper, front- black and white photograph of street with house on right side partially hidden by two trees, handwritten in white at bottom, "Looking North on Oneida Av., Bartlett, Ill 40507," back- printed in black on left side, "GENUINE PHOTOGRAPH C. R. Childs Photograph Post Cards, Chicago," handwritten address reads, "Mr F. A. Reinking 5417 Cortez St Austin Ill.," handwritten message reads, "Dear Fred we are still in Bartlett. Will leave here Thurs morning let me know when the beans are ready. Send mail to Linda's Anna." Postmarked from Bartlett, July 8, 1919, 4 PM, with green one cent postage stamp attached. This genuine photograph C. R. Childs postcard was mailed from Bartlett on July 8, 1919. The photographer was standing at the northeast corner of Oneida and Western Avenues, looking west. The home on the right is that of George Struckman, Bartlett's first and third village president. The Struckman house, constructed around 1888 in the Victorian Italianate style, still stands today. The carriage steps, hitching post and gas street lamp, that once graced the front yard, do not. The postcard was address to Fred Reinking. The sender, who was visiting Bartlett, was asking him to let them know, "when the beans are ready" and to "send the mail to Linda's." Charles R. Childs was a prominent Chicago photographer and postcard manufacturer from the early 1900s to circa 1950. He and his staff of photographers traveled around Illinois, and to Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, taking images of communities which, he printed and sold as postcards. The museum has several Childs Bartlett postcards in the collection. Note the title at the bottom of the card, "Looking North on Oneida Av., Bartlett, Ill." Oneida Avenue runs east and west and as stated above, the photographer is looking west. Childs also numbered his photographs and included that on the card. This one is 40507. |
