Receipt, 8 1/2" l x 5 1/2" w, paper, cream color with fine red lines, Front- printed in black- "Statement, Bartlett, Ill., ...190, in account with Henry Hoth dealer in Fine Wine, Liquors and Cigars", in pencil filled in- "Feb 17, 7, Henry Scheele, To Mdse. 60", Back- nothing. By 1895 the Henry Scheele family was living in the Bartlett area. Scheele was a labour and later a farmer, according to census records. They attended Bartlett's Immanuel United Church of Christ where their children were confirmed and married.. It appears the Scheeles at one point grew cucumbers that were sold to produce pickles! In May 1904, it was reported that Henry Hoth had taken possession of the O'Brien saloon, once located in the basement of Watermann's General Store. The business was referred to as his Sample Room where in August of that year, a "grand talking machine" was raffled with music by a "first class orchestra." Hoth's establishment appears to have been short lived. By 1908, he partnered with Henry Humbracht in the auction business with "German sales a specialty." |
