Typed in black- :Jan. 1-1918, Henry Scheele, to balance $2.50" stamped in black- "PAID W. Pfingsten, Feed & Lumber Co., Bartlett, ILL.", Back- nothing. H. F. Wm. Pfingsten purchased the lumberyard/feed operation once located at the eastern end of Bartlett Avenue. The business was formerly operated by Carr & Lobdell and earlier by Bartlett & Shields. Village President Bernhard "Ben" Schultz (1867-1932), the fourth person to serve in this capacity. Schultz’s Bartlett political career began in 1902 when he was elected village clerk. He served in this position until 1928 when then Village President John O'Brien died in office. A special election was held on May 22 and Schultz was elected to the office running unopposed. He held this position until his untimely death in office in 1932 from a heart attack at age 65. Just like today, being elected to serve on the Bartlett Village Board is not a fulltime position. Schultz had a fulltime job. In December 1903, the Palatine Enterprise reported Schultz left his job at Roselle’s J.C. Hattendorf, a lumberyard/mill, and was now in partnership with Bartlett’s William Pfingsten who operated a lumberyard/feed/coal business once located off the eastern end of Bartlett Avenue, where a commuter lot is today. Note is name in the upper right hand corner. He was the secretary and treasurer. Schultz, a lifelong Bartlett resident, stayed with the Bartlett firm until his retirement in 1926. |
