Postcard, 3 1/2" l x 5 1/2" w, paper, white, Front - "Greetings from Bartlett Ill." is written in brown in front of purple flowers with a green stem, behind the flower and writing is a purple rectangle, Back - "Post Card" is printed in green along the top, in the top right corner there is a green stamp, "April 27th 1909 Dear Friend Gracie...Your friend Alma Dralle" is written in pencil along the left side, "Miss Grace Leiseberg Bartlett Ill" is written in pencil along the right side. This postcard, illustrated with beautiful spring pansies, was sent to Grace Leiseberg Johnson (1901-1996) from her Bartlett friend Alma Dralle Carlson (1894-1992) and has a Bartlett postmark of April 27, 1909. Perhaps the message on the back explains the mailing of a postcard instead of an in person visit. The message reads, "Dear Friend Gracie, Well Gracie did the measles catch you or did you catch them, Your friend Alma Dralle" The Bartlett column of the April 23, 1909 Cook County Herald led off with, "Measles epidemic in Bartlett at present." Seems like Grace was one of several who caught the highly contagious acute viral respiratory illness. Cases in Hanover Township were also reported at that time. The "epidemic" continued into May with the Bartlett column naming "the measles victims this week…" |
