Poster, 11"w x 17"h, paper, illustration of corn stalks with pumpkin, printed in red- "Bartlett Vol. Fire Assn. Turkey Raffle..." Beginning sometime in the 1950s, the annual turkey raffle/sale was first instituted by the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department as a fundraiser. The event was initially held at the Bartlett Tavern where a live caged turkey was on display prior to the event. The turkey was named Herbie, by the then owners Serena and Ed Jensen's son, Wayne. He chose Herbie after his brother-in-law Herbert Pahl. Eventually Herbie got a mate Gertie and the names have stuck to this day, though a live turkey is no longer used. As it grew in attendance, the event was moved to the organization's then newly built Fire Barn on Main Street. The tradition continues today with the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Association hosting still at the their Fire Barn. |
