In the early 1950s, the Bartlett Police Department consisted of Fred Hoth who was the part-time police marshal and several part-time special deputy police officers who served at a salary of $75 a year. The officers had the power and authority to arrest any person committing a crime, or misdemeanor, and other such powers as might be exercised by a police officers of the State of Illinois. Special Deputy Police Officer Michael Dittmer appeared before the village board in June of 1953 and cited an incident where inadequate identification of his car, as a police car, resulted in an embarrassing and difficult situation when attempting to apprehend a traffic violator. The board approved the purchase of one siren, six side panel identification signs, one red light and three police caps in order that the Police Department be adequately and properly identified. At this time the officers were using their own cars, gasoline and had no uniforms. The signs were hooked onto the car with the hooks being inserted between the window glass and the door. Two known signs survive today. Both are in the museum's collection. |
