Hat, woman's, black, crown is pleated and appears to be silk, narrow asymetrical brim is velvet, ostrich feathers have been to pinned to the brim and are in unstable condition, Inside label- Carson Pirie Scott & Company, Chicago A hundred years ago, the 1920s brought major changes to fashion. After the end of WW I in 1918, women wanted clothing that was comfortable and simpler reflecting their new active lifestyle. It was the Jazz Age and hemlines were raised and waistlines were dropped. Large oversized hats of the previous Gibson Girls became fitted and bell-shaped and called cloches. This cloche is made of silk with a pleated crown and velvet trim on the brim. The long ostrich feathers have been pinned on the brim and appears to have been added by the wearer. The cloche was sold at Carson Pirie Scott & Co. whose logo can be seen on the interior lining. This style of logo was used from 1904 to 1947. The retailer was founded in 1854 and grew to more than 50 locations in the Midwest. The closest store to Bartlett was once located in Bloomingdale's Stratford Square Mall. |
