Novelty, promotional, plate, 8 1/4" dia, Front - ripple edge with light green border, also decorative gold border, white china, centered with 48 star American flag on pole, printed in gold below flag reads "Compliments of F.C. Waterman, dealer in general merchandise, Bartlett, ILL." Back - "D.E. McNicol, East Liverpool, O." Fred C. Waterman Jr. opened his general store on March 1, 1907. It was located at the southwest corner of Railroad and Oak Avenues. At one time the two-story clapboard structure had a dance floor on the second floor operated by Waterman and a tavern in the basement under the proprietorship of another person. One 199 advertisement stated a dance was held every Saturday night! Fred served as a rural letter carrier and later the post office was located in his store where he was first Bartlett's acting postmaster from April 8, 1935 to his appointment as postmaster on July 16, 1935. He served until his death in 1940. |
