Hesse" Back- blank Franz Hesse (1847-1913), was a Bartlett carpenter who immigrated to the US from Germany in 1873. On November 13, 1900 he billed Hanover Township for a table and dozen chairs ordered in October for a total of $8.75. But what else do you notice about his receipt? Hesse was also handled undertaking providing coffins and a hearse "on short notice." In 1907, the Hesses moved from their S. Oak Avenue home to Denver and held a moving sale. The newspaper reported, "At the sale of Franz Hesse in Bartlett, his furniture and household utensils went like hot cakes, but when it came to the coffins, no one cared to invest in an article which would always remind him of a time when he was compelled to pass in his checks." |
