Today this area is part of Bartlett. He attended Elgin High School, graduating in 1934. Without bus service or a car, how did he get there? He rode the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E) from Wayne to Elgin. This Children's 46 Ride Commutation Ticket was sold to him on October 17, 1932, The booklet was for children under 18 years-old. It was presented to the conductor with the coupons (tickets) undetached. At times the student might have been asked to sign their name on the coupon to compare the signature on the cover to the coupon, thus proving ownership. The CA&E, an electric interurban line, began construction in 1900 and operated until its official abandonment in 1961, four years after the final passenger trains had run. Today, most of the right-of-way of the CA & E has been converted into the Illinois Prairie Path. |
