Cane, wood, 36" l, small silvertone plate attached by curved handle, pressed on plate- "Hall of Science, A Century of Progress, Chicago, 1933", image of building, metal tip on bottom. "The Hall of Science, a beautiful structure designed by Paul Cret of Philadelphia. Here are housed the exhibits which illustrate the things that men are now thinking about in the various branches of learning known as the pure sciences...Two floors are used for exhibiting the basic sciences which, for convenience of operation, are grouped under the following seven heads: mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and medicine." Lifelong Bartlett residents Herman Wendler and his wife Amelia Krumfuss Wendler attended the fair and purchased this cane as a souvenir. As an infant, Herman's parents took him to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, also held in Chicago. |
