Calendar, 3 1/8" x 5 1/4", green, metal and paper, 1951 monthly desk calendar with pull down cardboard stand on back. Front -printed in darker green, "Standard Oil Co., E. T. Jacobson Agent. Bartlett - 4901" Two icons printed in green ink- Standard Oil logo and telephone. Do you still use a tangible calendar or is everything on your phone? In 1951, the Standard Oil Company provided this desktop calendar to its patrons. The company had large oil holding tanks that were once located along Railroad Avenue, adjacent to the railroad tracks, between S. Hickory and S. Western Avenues. Today, the site is commuter parking. The tanks were removed in April 1970 due to safety concerns. The oil would be delivered by the railroad via the railroad siding that used to be there. By 1950, Ernest "Ernie" Jacobson (1908-1980) was the one-time agent for the company as noted on the calendar. He would deliver the oil to homes and farms in the area using a truck. Jacobson and his wife June moved to Bartlett in 1944. The couple had two children, Mary and David. Jacobson served on the village board first being elected in 1959 and reelected in 1963 and 1967. He served a total of three terms before being defeated in 1971. It was during his tenure that then Fire Chief Elmer Hecht, told the village board in February 1965, the oil facility, "doesn't meet the fire code we've adopted right now…" Jacobson stayed out of the debate since he was an employee for Standard Oil. Jacobson also served on the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years, retiring in 1969. He held the rank of 2nd assistant chief. He and his wife are buried in Bartlett Cemetery. From the estate of Harvey and Elvina Brandt. |
