Description |
Lantern, 12" h (handle down), 7" dia base, metal (brass tone) & clear glass, swing handle, top plate is marked "Patented May 28, 1895" and "C. M & St. P. Ry." The clear glass globe is also embossed with "C. M. & St. P. Ry." , bell bottom base, single wire guard and twist off bottom. This is a switchman's' kerosene lantern that was used on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway as a means of communication especially at night when flags and semaphores could not be seen. It was portable and also offered an efficient light source that could be easily seen in a freight yard, depot platform, etc. |
