Separate crescent board sign- 6" w x 2 1/2" l, , that states- "The Way to the Vettes' Oak Glen Farm Nurseries Bartlett, Illinois About 24 miles from Oak Park", this sign was used to cover original sign in upper right hand corner. Bertil "Bert" Walgren (1916-1986) attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he graduated in 1941. At one time, Bert was a chauffer for the John L. Vette family, of Oak Park, who commissioned him to illustrate this map to the Vette's Bartlett property. Though not dated, the map was created after 1929, the year the "Brick School "(Bartlett School) opened at North and Eastern Avenues. The "Small School" was the one-room Oak Glen School which was once located on the southeast corner of Stearns and South Bartlett Roads. The "Golf Course Sign" would have read "Bartlett Hills." The heart of Bartlett is depicted with the "R.R. Depot" and steam train on the tracks. The map has two versions. The original sign in the upper right corner states, "The Way to the Oak Glen Farm, Bartlett, Illinois, The Farm is about 24 miles from Oak Park." It appears Bert made a second version with a separate sign that could be overlaid that states, "The Way to the Vettes' Oak Glen Farm Nurseries, Bartlett, Illinois, About 24 miles from Oak Park." Other changes were made also to the map with the overlays of other small sign such as "Creek" and "The nurseries are just beyond my school." Bert served in WW II where he was United States Navel Reserve where he held the rank of ensign. He attended the Midshipmen's School at Norte Dame University. Bert, a member of the Art Board, his illustrations of a midshipman's life appear in their 1943 yearbook "The Capstan." After the war, Bert married, had a family, and became an art teacher at Chicago's Wright Junior College where he taught until his retirement. |
