Description |
Ashtray, metal, bronze and silver color, round with upright four cigarette holder in center, embossed on holder- "Hoth's Garage, Farm Equipment Sales-Service, Bartlett, ILL., Phone 2441", on bottom- "B & B St. Paul, Minn., U.S.A." Looking for a Horse Drawn Spreader? Hoth's Garage had it! Fred Hoth (1879-1961) immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of two-years-old. The family settled in the Bartlett area where initially, as a young man, Hoth farmed. Later he was briefly employed by Milwaukee Road and the Huntley Dairy in Bartlett. In 1917, it was reported Hoth quit his job at the dairy and opened a "machine business" with Alfred Sodman. Hoth's Garage, as it was later called, was located on Main Street across the street from Bartlett Village Hall. The business carried and serviced farm machinery, selling brands such as J I Case, manufacturers of threshing machines and gasoline powered tractors, and New Idea, known for its manure spreaders. This metal ash tray was an advertising give-away and dates most likely dates to the 1940s. All the pertinent information about the garage is embossed on the cigarette holder portion. The business' phone number was 2441. No address was needed for door-to-door- mail delivery was still years away! In 1948, Hoth ceased operations. Hoth was also an early Village trustee and worked for the Village for 40 years. For thirty of those years, he was the chief of police and served as a constable for Cook County. |
