Trophy, 7" h x 3" w, metal & wood, wood base with silver tone plaque attached, plaque reads- "F. Benicke Hole in One, Apple Orchard 1970", wood column with round silver tone disc, wood cap, 2 3/4" statue of man swinging, golf club is missing. This trophy awarded to Fred "Fritz" Benicke (1914-2006) for his golfing prowess, a hole in one at the Bartlett Park District's Apple Orchard Gold Course. A longtime Bartlett resident, Fred immigrated from Germany to Bartlett in his youth becoming a U. S. citizen in 1941. Fred attended Bartlett School and continued his education at the then 2-year Bartlett High School where he completed the 10 grade. He married Vernetta Thurnau, a fellow Bartlett School classmate in 1936 and the couple had three daughters: twins Lynda and Marica and Pamela. Fred was a business owner and a member of the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department for many years. Both Vernetta and Fred enjoyed golfing at the Bartlett courses. In 1970, Fred shot a hole in one at Apple Orchard and received this trophy! |
