Description |
Map, 62" w x 74" h, framed with glass, canvas Front- Van Vechten & Snyder's Real Estate Map of Cook County 1875, included are townships showing land ownership and acreage owned, roads, waterways, railroads, some communities/or parts and ranges of townships enlarged at bottom portion, several advertisements including that of real estate sellers. Scale 1 1/2" to a mile. Reminisce of Marilyn Giles Ziegler, December 2015, concerning this map gifted to the museum by her brother Ray Giles. "My Grandpa Giles (Thomas. Edward) who lived on Western Ave., Bartlett, had an 1875 oil cloth map of Cook County that was given to him by his neighbor Thomas Rutherford. My grandfather gave the map to my dad Tom Giles in 1955. I remember the map being in the basement, rolled up, and later he kept it under the couch in the living room. He would get it out occasionally to show visitors. In 1984, he took the map to an art gallery at Stratford Square to have it framed...The framed map had to be delivered to my dad as it was much too large to put in his car. He had it standing against the north wall of the living room for quite some time. One day he asked me if I wanted it. I told him, "No, I don't have a place to put anything that large on a wall." I don't think Ray wanted it at his home either, so my dad put it on 'loan' to the Bartlett History Museum. Later it was 'given' to Ray who in turn donated it to the museum. I remember my son being in Elgin High School and telling Mr. E.C. Alft (HS teacher and Elgin historian) about the 1875 map. Mr. Alft told Brian, "Oh, there's lots of those around." When Brian told my dad that, my dad was really ticked. There really aren't that many 1875 maps around." |
