Image, digital, sepia, Front-31 boys and girls sitting/standing outside of brick building with windows, one male adult sitting on right side, chalkboard in front states- "Bartlett Grammar Sept 11 -94" back nothing, On September 11, 1894, the grammar grades of Bartlett School posed for this class photo. Their teacher, name unknown, is seated on the right-hand side and dressed in his finest suit and smart bow tie. At this time, the schoolhouse was located on the southwest corner of North and Hickory Avenues. It appears that pupils may have been asked to remove their hats for the photo. If you look closely, you can see hats stacked on the ledges of both windowsills. Bartlett School, the village's first institution of learning, was established in 1874. Alma Schick Humbracht (1884-1931), with the bangs, is in the back row, fifth from right. |
