Description |
Transparency, slide, 2" x 2", color, streetview of two-story clapboard building with steeply pitched roof line, bay window, screened porch, surrounded by trees, bushes, garage in background. The home was built in 1876 for Dr. Elias C. Guild, Bartlett first physician. The Elgin Advocate of August 19, 1876 stated "…the domiciliary habitation of Dr. Guild, who thinks it will be the best residence on the road to Chicago, when he gets it entirely completed. It is in the shape of a Greek cross, with bay windows to the south and east. Its fartherest extension is fifty feet one way, and thirty the other, with considerable of ornate in its architecture." The home was built in the architecturally important Gothic Revival style. The steeply pitched cross-gabled roofs, bays and pointed arched windows are all characteristic of the style. The home, which also housed Dr. Guild's office, stands today at 128 S. Hickory Ave. The photographer is standing on Hickory Avenue, looking southwest. This is the east side of the home. The two-story addition on the left, the screen porch on the right and the garage were added at a later date. |
