Print, photographic, 8" x 10", black and white, Front- two girls standing up, looking at another girl who is sitting down and sewing fabric with a sewing machine which has the word "Singer" printed on it, sewing supplies are near the bottom left corner of the photo, Back- Newspaper text is cut and attached to back, stamped "Chicago Photographers...File No. 5900-4" and written in pencil "Rheumatic Fever...P.P." Herrick House was once located on West Bartlett Road, just east of Routh 59. It was first a facility for children with rheumatic fever. The children lived there while recovering. They attended school on the grounds, did activities and enjoyed physical sports such as swimming in the lake which was on the grounds. This is an images taken for newspaper publication. The newspaper clipping attached to the back of the image states, "Sewing absorbs the interest of these two young residents of Herrick House, The aim at Herrick House is to give the young children as normal an environment as possible. The institution admits children on the basis of recommendation by physicians or clinics without regard to race or religion." |
