Print, photographic, 10 1/2" w x 8" l, black & white, Front- two people in foreground, two people in background, standing outside with buildings, cars, water tower in background. Back- newspaper articles, photographer slip glued to back, stamped dates, writing in pencil. This image of Warren Knowles, left foreground and Ellen Meyer, right foreground, appeared in the July 25, 1976 edition of the Chicago Sun-Times. The picture was taken by photographer Carmen Reporto, who had the duo standing at Oak and Bartlett Avenues, looking east. The adjoining article was written by Laura Green and focused on Bartlett, once "a whistlestop on the Milwaukee Road, is an exurb at the tipping point." Knowles was a Bartlett Park District commissioner at the time and Meyer an "exurb activist." Members of PACE (Positive Action Citizens for the Environment), of which Meyer founded and was president of, had been trying to discourage developers from purchasing Bartlett's surrounding farmland and turning into subdivisions. It was felt at that time Bartlett's population could swell from its 5,000 to 50,000 though time. The man in the background with his arm on the utility pole is Earl Humbracht, owner of Humbracht's Confectionary, the first building on the left. The other man is unknown. |
