Description |
Image, digital, black & white, appears colorized, Front- young boy, wearing snowsuit/hat, standing outside in snow in front of older clapboard home, pulling small sled, at bottom in black- "Lee at the rear of the old house." Lee Lemke is all bundled up and has his sled in hand. Old man winter has nothing on him! The Roy Lemke family moved into Bartlett in 1947. Their first home, pictured here, was once located where the Town Center is today. Lee recalls the chicken coop that provided the family with eggs, the grape arbors which he would make a little money selling grapes from, the large backyard which he used as a softball field, and the igloo he would make each winter from a mound of snow. Around 1960, the old farm house was moved to the grounds of Herrick House, a facility for children with rheumatic fever once located on West Bartlett Road. It has since been razed. In 1957, the Lemkes moved into a brand-new home they had built at 200 N Hickory Avenue by Art Taylor. The resided there until 1967. |
