Print, photographic, mat- 12" w x 9 3/4" h, image- 8 1/2" w x 6 1/2"h, sepia, Front- buildings in a row, with utility poles, dirt road, sidewalk, trees, picket fences, three people standing outside by fence, barns, trees in background, Back- white sticker, written in ink- Esther Movitz nee Bull" This image is of buildings/homes on Railroad Avenue between Main Street and Oak Avenue. You are looking south from the train tracks. The unique thing about this image is that it was originally printed in reverse. The corrected image is shown here. The first full building on the left is the John J. O'Brien home, since razed. The full building on the right is 111 W. Railroad Avenue. At the time this image was taken the building was home to the Jeremiah and Lena Kelley family. Mrs. Kelley was Bartlett's first switchboard operator and housed the switchboard in this building. By the front door, on the lower left, is a sign for the Chicago Telephone Company which eventually became Illinois Bell Telephone Company. By 1920, Lena Kelley moved and her switchboard relocated to her home on Oneida Avenue. This helps date the image to between 1901 and prior to 1920. A partial view of the once Bartlett Tavern, 113 W. Railroad Avenue, is on the right. |
