Print, Photographic, 7 1/4" w x 5" h, black & white, Front- Football team of 1933, 18 men holding football helmets, Back- listed names of the people in the image and date taken. Did you know the village once had a local football team in the early 1930s called the Bartlett Bears? The team, who played against other local teams, is pictured here on October 22, 1933. The players were, front row, left to right, Dexter Jippert, Helmut Tilche, Donald Baxmann, Fred Benicke, Harold Tornquist, Francis Rees, and Chester Marxen. Back row, left to right, L. Zierke, W. Wilson, Roy Butz, Elmer Fessler, Arnold, Raiha, Gordon Jensen, George Esh, Eric Ladewig, Edward Kenneke, Harold Verne, and George Presher, coach. The November 4, 1932, Roselle Register featured this headline on its front page, "Bartlett Roughs Roselle 20-0." The article stated, "The Roselle Independents traveled to the den of the Bartlett Bears Sunday and came back slightly chewed up on the short end of a 20-0 score…Porter and Tilche going over [for] the touchdowns. Zierke's plunging featured for Bartlett, while the line play of Wiese and Overton, stood out for Roselle." |
