Print, Photographic, mat- 8" x 10", print- 6 1/2" w x 4 1/4" l, sepia, Front- five men wearing hats sitting in front of house that is being built, tools, scaffolding in background, sign reads- "H.J Hothan Contractor & Builder Bartlett ILL", Back-stamped in black- "B.C. Benke, Home Photographer, Gen Delivery- Elgin, ILL." Henry Hothan (1880 - 1954), presumed first on left, and his crew, take a break from their labors building the home at 148 N. Oak Avenue. Hothan was in the carpentry business by age 19, partnering with William Waterman. In 1909, Waterman sold his share of the business to Hothan who continued building houses, sheds and more in the area until his retirement. Note his sign on the left. Hothan also served as one-time village treasurer collecting payments at his Eastern Avenue home. |
