Print, photographic, 8 w" x 10 l", black & white, Front- men outside with fire pumper, some in turnout gear, door reads- "Calumet & Hecla, Flexonics Division, Bartlett, Illinois" large brick building in background with tanks in front, barrel in foreground. "What might have been a serious fire recently at the Flexonics plant on Devon Avenue, was prevented by [the] Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department. The fire reportedly started in an electrically heated testing furnace, but firemen kept it confined although smoke filled the entire research and development department." Hoffman Herald, June 6, 1963, Bartlett column When did Flexonics, form a fire department of its own? Perhaps this event spurred the company, today Senior Flexonics located at 300 E. Devon Avenue, to do so. These images of a practice fire were taken on May 18, 1964 by John "Jack" Putignano (1924-2010). Jack began his service on the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department in 1965 and retired in 2005 as a part-time paid-on call firefighter with the rank of deputy chief. He was also a 40 plus year employee of Flexonics where he worked in product engineering. Jack's knowledge of firefighting was certainly an asset to the company, where he was chief of this in-house fire crew. |
