Print, photographic, mat- 6"w x 8 3/4"l, image- 3"w x 5 1/2" l,, black & white, Front- young woman standing in studio with floral backdrop, arm resting on wicker chair, wearing long white dress with dark accents at yoke, waist, sleeves, dark hair pulled back, lower left corner- "I. V. Morrell, Elgin, Ill." Back- written in pen- "Martha Krumfuss" This undated image of Martha Krumfuss Brandt (1883-1965) was sent to a relative. Martha was one of eleven children born to pioneer settlers Carl Henry Krumfuss, Bartlett's shoemaker, and his wife Dorothea. The Krumfuss family were charter members of Immanuel United Church of Christ. Martha was confirmed at the church on April 25, 1897. According to the 1900 census, Martha, then age 14, was a "boarder" with Bartlett's Carl C. Schultz family where she was a "servant." She and Fred Brandt were married at Immanuel on May 6, 1903. The "Enterprise-Register" reported a reception was held at the Krumfuss home. Afterward the "young people" went to O'Brien's Hall "where they indulged in dancing until the next morning." She is wearing a ring on left hand and perhaps this image was taken after her marriage to Fred, Martha and Fred had two children, Dorothy and Harvey. Martha Krumfuss Brandt was a lifelong Bartlett resident and is buried in Lakewood Memorial Park. |
