Image, digital, page from photo album, Front- two black and white portraits, color- Thanksgiving menu card, written in white ink, "Thanksgiving Day on Salisbury Sound" Eugene H. Haase (1926-2003) began his military service in the Navy three years after Pearl Harbor on December 9, 1944. He served as a radio man aboard the USS ARD 25 in the Pacific Theater. He obtained the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. During World War II, Bartlett teenager Violet Jensen wrote to many of our Village's servicemen, including Haase. Love bloomed between the couple and after his discharge on August 20, 1946 and the couple married on April 12, 1948. A few years later on June 26, 1951, Haase was recalled to active duty for the conflict in Korea. Once again he was a radio man but this time aboard the USS Salisbury Sound. That Thanksgiving was spent with shipmates not family. Haase saved the dinner menu and sent these pictures home to his wife. His was discharged from the Navy for a second time on October 30, 1952. |
