In 1880 it was #74 on the US name list, falling to an all-time low of #926 in 1983. As of 2022, it ranks #121. Meet August W. Humbracht (1886-1996) one of the several Augusts in Bartlett history. August was born on July 20, 1886 to early Bartlett settlers Henry Humbracht Sr. and his wife Wilhelmine Schueneman Humbracht. The family lived at 104 S. Oak Avenue. Their home still stands today and is a dental office with apartments above. August attended Bartlett School. So did his children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Four generations total! He was a lifelong member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. He initially worked with his father who was a prominent cattle dealer/buyer in the area. Upon his marriage to Lillian Jay (1891-1977), pictured here, on June 1, 1911 he was gifted with a farm once located off of Oak Avenue, near Lake Street, where they built their home on the crest of a hill. It was the custom in the Humbracht family to give each son a farm and each daughter a home when they wed. August and Lilly had five children Louis (1914-2000), Lawrence (1916-1993), Lester (1918-2005), Jane (1924-2016) and Robert (May-July 1931). Jane and her husband Basil "Doc" Ping and their family resided on the farm with her parents and helped operated it until the property was sold and developed and the home razed. In 1942, August went to work for Morison Co. in South Elgin a business involved in defense work during WW II. Their son Lawrence was serving in the Army at that time. August retired in 1960. August and Lillie are buried in Lakewood Memorial Park. |
