Print, photographic, 8' x 10", black & white, looking down snow covered ski run, snow only on run, chair lift on left with riders, skiers on hill, bushes, trees homes in background. Chicago Sun-Times photographer Rich Hein captured skiers heading down the intermediate hill at Villa Olivia in 1988. Villa Olivia traces its roots back to the early 1900s and Chicago lawyer Charles Erbstein who built his estate there naming it after his daughter Olivia. The Philip Corrado family purchased the property, which now included a golf course, in 1966. In 1968, a ski operation began on the slope of the 12th and 13th hole fairways. Two years later major improvements were made bringing the total number of slopes to five. The largest hill underwent renovation making it more challenging for the experience skier. In order to achieve this the Corrados built it with the Erbstein mansion being buried within. Philip Corrado Jr recalls they also borrowed fill from the west 40 acres of the property which lowered it by several feet. More fill was provided by digging out the pond in front of the banquet facility. When the hill was complete, Crown Vetch sod was nailed down with wooden pegs to prevent erosion. Next, a quad chair lift was added, pictured on the left. Since 2010, the golf and ski venue has been owned and operated by the Bartlett Park District. |
