Alvina Humbracht Winkelman (1881-1966) was one of seven children born to Louis, a German immigrant, and Wilhemena (Minnie) Humbracht. In 1881, the year she was born, the family purchased land at the southwest corner of Oak and North Avenues built their home which still stands today at 102 S. Oak Avenue. Alvina attended Bartlett School where she completed 7th grade. At that time, the school was located one block west at the southwest corner of North and Hickory Avenues. She was confirmed in 1895 at Immanuel United Church of Christ where the family held membership. On Thursday evening May 20, 1909, Alvina married Fred Winkelman, a German immigrant, in the parsonage of Immanuel. The couple welcomed their first child, Myrtle, who was born on Easter Sunday, in 1910. Their son Albert was born in 1913. The couple once lived 320 W. Oneida Avenue, which still stands today, and operated a grocery/butcher shop on Oak Avenue just south of Railroad Avenue. Their specialty was their Rinderwurst which was homemade once a week and sold out quickly! Sadly, Alvina lost her brother Fred Humbracht to the 1918 flu pandemic. Her husband Fred died in March 1937. According to Cook County records, the Humbracht's Oak Avenue home was quick claimed to her in November 1937. Alvina is credited for turning the large single-family home into apartments which became known as the Winkelman Apartments, where she also resided, pictured here. Alvina and other senior Bartlett women formed a birthday club that hosted monthly "covered dish" parties in their homes! She is buried in Bartlett Cemetery along side her husband Fred (1884-1937). |
