Print, photographic, 2 3/4" x 4 1/2", black & white, woman in floral dress standing on sidewalk in front of house. Mary Wendler Niewisch Kramer (1854-1951) stands in front of her 315 W. North Avenue home. She was born in Hanover Township in 1854 to John Wendler, a farmer, and his wife Margaret. In 1885, Mary married Herman Niewisch one-time owner the Bartlett Tavern. The couple were charter members of Immanuel United Church of Christ, located at 100 W. Western Avenue. Mary was also a charter member of the church's women's organization the Frauen Verein. The women raised funds for items for the church, like a bell, and supported many charitable causes. The couple had one daughter Anna. After Niewisch's death in 1895 at age 38, Mary wed John Kramer. The couple resided at 315 W. North Avenue, pictured here. She and other senior Bartlett women were members of a birthday club that hosted monthly "covered dish" parties in their homes. |
