Print, photographic, sepia, 6 1/2" x 4 1/4", Front- a two people posing outside on dirt road, woman is seated in buggy with dog and man is standing adjacent to small horse which is pulling buggy. Barn, trees and homes are in background. Photo is taken by H.Austin and Co. of Chicago. Back- written in ink- "Miss Alice Vial taught in Bartlett. I am niece Ms. Walter L. Martin, 5743 Wolf Road, La Grange, Ill" Luke and Elizabeth Cunningham pose with their horse and buggy, location unknown. Luke Cunningham was the station agent in Bartlett. He held the position from 1900 or so until his death in 1909. He also was a Village trustee being elected in 1907. The Village Hall was draped in black for 30 days upon his passing. He was buried in his native Canada. His wife Elizabeth was also born in Canada and both her parents were Irish. Elizabeth was a member in the Bartlett camp of the Royal Neighbors of America, a national fraternal benefit society for women. She held the position of recorder. Luke was a member of the Bartlett camp of the Modern Woodmen of America, a national fraternal benefit society for men. Upon his passing Elizabeth received a $3,000 death beneficiary payment from the Modern Woodmen. The July 1909 newspaper article noted, "Life insurance is a good investment." That same month she purchased the home her and Luke had been renting from Mr. Lobdell for $1,300. Elizabeth remained in the area, later moving to Elgin, until her passing in 1951. She is buried in Lakewood Memorial Park. |
