Description |
Image, digital, black & white, Front- two women wearing long skirts and long aprons sitting outside on stairs with small dog in between. Caroline "Carrie" Harmening (1861-1934), left, never had an occupation listed in census records. If she did, it could have said "healer and entrepreneur." She was more than just a housekeeper, wife of Henry and mom to three. Carrie was known throughout the area for her abilities in relation to healing. Gladys Schick Humbracht (1918-2016) recalled to the museum when she was a youngster getting bite on the arm by one of their farm dogs. It was deep and bad. Her parents took her to see Carrie. They waited in-line outside the Harmening home for their turn. Carrie recited prayers over Gladys and rubbed her homemade salve into the inflicted area. Gladys' wound healed and left no scar. Area wide, residents relied on Carrie's salve to cure the discomforts they experienced, so much so, she packaged it and sold it via ads in the newspapers for 50 cents. Her recipe still exists with the family who claims also it is the best! Carrie is pictured here with her neighbor to the south, Mrs. Sophia Schultz, right, on the back steps of the Harmening home. |
