Image, digital, scanned from photocopy, black & white, Front- three rows of students, male and female, seating inside at desks in classroom, adult male standing at rear, artwork, clock, blackboards, woodburning stove on rear wall, in lower right corner written in ink- ""Ruth Harmening, Bartlett Ill., 1-2 year high school, 5-12-28" Ruth Harmening Giles (1916-2014), middle row, second from front, attended the two-year Bartlett School program after which she completed her education at Elgin High School. At this time Bartlett School was located at the southwest corner of North and Hickory Avenues. The following year the school house was razed when Bartlett School moved to its current location at North and Eastern Avenues. Ruth shared a chilly memory of this building. Each classrooms were heated by the large wood burning stove, seen here against the back wall by Dallas Puffer. It was the job of the teachers to start the fire each morning, stoking the flames to warm their classroom. Students had to wear there coats at the start of the day due to the time it took to get the chill out of the air. Also, the ink in their inkwells would freeze overnight. They couldn't begin writing lessons until their ink melted from the warmth. Other students in the classroom were left row (against the windows), front to back, Elnora Jensen, Suzanna Ostrom, Jack Norton, George Moffat, Raymond Knaak. Middle row, front to back, Ralph Feuerhaken, Ruth Harmening Giles, Evelyn Sandaker, Donald Baxmann, Albert Winkleman. Right row, front to back, Merva Meyer, Doris Wasmond, Dorothy Marxen, Arthur Holtz, Eric Ladwig, Helmut Tilche. The gentleman in the rear is Dallas Puffer, teacher and principal. Bartlett High School was in existence from 1919 to 1941 and was located within Bartlett School. The high school students had their own classroom, teacher and activities separate from the grade school students. |
