Print, photographic, Mat- 7"w x 6"h, Image- 4 3/4"w x 3 3/4"h, sepia, Front- looking down dirt row to row of perpendicular buildings, Back- blank This image was taken on Oak Avenue looking south toward the businesses on Railroad Avenue and dates between 1905 and 1907. This is determined by the names on the businesses, left to right. The first building on the left, 111 Railroad Avenue. still standing in 2019, was home to the first location of the Chicago Telephone Company's switching office. By the 1940s it was Mungerson's Sanitary Barber Shop. The next building 113 Railroad Avenue, was built in the 1880s. It has always been a bar/resturant. Herman Schnadt, whose name appears on the sign, bought the business in 1905. The next building, 121 Railroad Avenue, was razed in May 2018. It was home to general stores and bar/resturants. By 1900 August Schick was operating it as a general store which in 1907 he sold to Louis Stumpf. The two-story building with the arched roof line, once stood on th southwest corner of Railroad and Oak Avenues. It was razed in the late 1970s and today the site is a parking lot. At the time of this image it was home to Watermann's General Store. The building on the far right and in the foreground is the Bartlett depot built in 1873. In 2010, it became the Bartlett Depot Museum. |
