Image, digital, black & white, Front- man standing outside pushing toddler in stroller on sidewalk, buildings, trees in background. Lifelong Bartlett resident Gustav Krumfuss (1886-1967) is out for a stroll with his granddaughter Lynn Regenburg Tagge. Born to pioneer settlers Carl Henry and Dorothea Krumfuss, Gus was one of the first telephone linemen with the Illinois Bell Telephone Company stringing the initial telephone lines in much of northwest suburban Chicagoland. In the summer horse-drawn linecarts were used and in winter, Gus would strap-on snowshoes to get the job done. He retired at the age of 61 because Illinois Bell felt he was too old to be climbing telephone poles! Gus was a member of the Illinois Bell Pioneers, a one-time village trustee, catcher on the Bartlett Cubs baseball team and member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. He married Elsie Ohlhaber in 1915 and the couple had two daughters, Ruth born in 1917 and Carol born in 1922. The family resided on Oak Avenue. |
