Print, Photographic, 6 1/2" w x 5"h, black & white, front- Two horses attached to wagon, man siting in wagon in front of Henry Harmening tavern, five men pictured back- Property of the Bartlett Historical Society stamp. Henry Harmening Sr. (1860-1925) took ownership of the Bartlett Tavern in 1893 located at 113 W. Railroad Avenue. Here he is pictured, second from right, on the steps of the business with what appears to be a delivery of beer in barrels for his establishment. The large sign, below his name, advertised Peter Schoenhofen beer was served. The lettering on the glass reads, "Harmening House, Liquor & Cigars." His wife Caroline cooked tasty free lunches for their patrons, with Rinderwurst (pot roast) being a favorite. In 1906, he sold the business to his auction partner Herman Schnadt. Built in the 1880s, the tavern was once the village's oldest continuing business, built as tavern/restaurant and operated as such until 2019. Since 2022, the building has been home to State Farm Agent Dutch Van Rossum who remodeled the main floor into his office spaces and the second floor, once the dance/meeting hall, into two apartments. |
