Print, photographic, 6' w x 4" h, color, Front- Train engine pulling passengers cars passing old building with sign "Spaulding" on side. Back- in ink, "Spaulding Depot-Late May 1979, Note the "Milwaukee Road" commuter cars. Photo by Robert Piatt" The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) was the longest railroad owner of the commuter service from Chicago to Elgin. Pictured here is the commuter equipment of the Milwaukee Road as it travels past the abandoned Spaulding depot, just west of Bartlett. The railroad eventually experienced financial hardship on its freight, passenger and commuter operations throughout the United States. In 1982, after its bankruptcy, Chicagoland commuter operations were passed onto the Regional Transportation Authority. Today commuter service is operated by Metra as the Milwaukee District/West Line. |
