Description |
Print, photographic, 8"w x 10"h, black & white, Front- Outdoor view of lake surrounded by trees. Man on left standing on pier, children in water, child on right leaning against tree. Back- written in ink and circled- "Herrick House", glues to back newspaper caption for image- " An instructor gives swimming lesson's to county's dependent children in Herrick House picturesque private lake. One boy undergoes punishment for misbehavior, leans gloomily against tree at right." a second newspaper clipping reports on the property, stamped in red- "Daily News Jul 27 1964". Herrick House, an 89-acre site, was once located on the south side of West Bartlett Road, just east of Route 59. It began as a facility for children with rheumatic fever. In 1962, the facility closed due to lack of patients. The Herrick House corporation was dissolved and distributed its assets to the Chicago Community Trust. In 1964, the trust reopened Herrick House as a "temporary home for dependent and neglected children." This press photograph that appeared in the Daily News is taken from this time frame. The lake was once called Island Lake by early Bartlett residents due to a floating bog once present. |
