Image, digital, color, Front- woman, standing, wearing crownlike hat, large beaded necklace, holding many strands of beads, distributing them to older men and woman, sitting inside room. Mardi Gras translated means "Fat Tuesday," a day when all the fats in the home are used up in food preparation before the start of Lent the next day. The observance can also include the tradition of parades and the wearing of costumes, masks and colorful beads. Though the grandest celebration in the United States is held in New Orleans, Bartlett's Victory Centre residents got into the true spirit in 2009. Then Village President Catherine Melchert, standing on right, was the guest of honor, distributing beads for all to wear before the serving of paczkis, a rich donut, also associated with the holiday. Melchert served as village president from 1993 to 2009 and as of 2023, is the only female to have held the office. Victory Centre, located at 1105 West Bartlett Road, is a supportive living community which opened in 2006. |
