A tiered cake with a golden 50th topper and accented with golden leaves was the perfect tasty treat for Alice (1880-1976) and Thomas Edward Giles (1876-1957) on the occasion of their golden anniversary. The couple was married on March 27, 1901, in the Norwood area, today a part of Chicago. A half of century later, they celebrated with a community open house at their Western Avenue home in the afternoon, pictured here. The party continued in the evening for their four sons; Maurice, Wesley, Glenn and Thomas and their families. The Giles moved to Bartlett in 1928 to their new home at 243 S. Western Avenue which Thomas, his sons and a cousin built. The house still stands today. Prior, the family lived and farmed on one of the last farms within the Chicago city limits. Later, Thomas was a truck driver. Alice was a member of Bartlett’s Birthday Club, a local group of ladies that met and socialized at each other homes. Her fellow club members surprised her with a beautiful plant in honor of the couple’s golden anniversary. |
