Back- stamped in blue ink-" Photo by Don Honick", written in pencil- "B6363-2" Play Ball! Bartlett had men's baseball teams back in the day, such as the Bartlett Cubs, but there have also been men's softball teams too. Then Village President Leo Blanchette (1899-1991) appears to be trying out his swing before this 1963 softball game got underway in Bartlett Park. Blanchette was initially appointed village president in 1963 by the village board, after the resignation of John Buelting. He served until 1973. Blanchette and his family moved to Bartlett in 1955 from Schiller Park, IL where he served on their village board. Under his administration, Bartlett began to see growth, literally, with acres of land being annexed for the building of subdivisions such as Bartlett Oaks and Country Creek. A new building code was issued by the village, in Blanchette's words to "safeguard the future of the village by setting quality standards that will eliminate the possibility of shoddily built homes filling the area." The second village hall was completed under his leadership in 1968. Several years prior, he and the village trustees included a portion of the then proposed hall as a space for a future Bartlett library, which won't be formally established until a 1972 referendum. A $2 million village wastewater treatment plant began construction in 1972, near the end of his administration. Blanchette, a WW I veteran, was the owner of L. Blanchette Co., that did general construction and masonry work. His office was located in the family's Lake Street home. |
