Church Sewing Circle." Jack Mayer (1925-2008), son of Harold and Ruth Mayer, was employed by the Milwaukee Road in the Bensenville yard when he filled out his WW II registration card on April 5, 1943, the day after his 18th birthday. He along with Lyle Baxmann were two Bartlett young men who enlisted that April week. The August 20, 1943, "Arlington Heights Herald" reported "Jack Mayer, who is in the Armed Forces, has been transferred to Gainesville, Florida." In October, the air cadet in the U. S. Army received an honorable discharge and returned home to Bartlett. Immanuel United Church of Christ, Bartlett oldest continuing congregation, had two women's groups at that time, the Sewing Circle and the Women's Guild. Both groups did charity work and raised funds for the congregation and other efforts including WW II support. For example, both groups contributed money to the Bartlett chapter of the Red Cross in 1943. The Service Prayer Book, copyrighted in 1940, is dedicated to the "Army Navy, Marine and Air Corps of the United States and the Canadian Armed Forces." It was complied and edited by N. M. Ylvisaker, Major Chaplain O.R.C. |
